Context

Vereda roasts specialty coffee in Pernambuco and sells it online. The shop had to feel as careful as the coffee, and stay quick on the phones most customers buy from.

Idea

The storefront is plain HTML, built ahead of time with Astro. Shopify runs the catalog, the cart and the checkout behind it.

The only JavaScript on the page belongs to the cart. It ships as small Svelte islands, so every page can be read before a single script runs.

Outcome

The shop is live at vereda.coffee. Most of its weight is type: eight font files make up 190 of its 232 KB, and the scripts that run the cart add 26 KB.

Measured

We loaded vereda.coffee three times on a throttled phone and three times on a desktop, in a clean browser, and kept the last run of each. On the phone, the largest paint lands at 1.49 s.
